If you have a laptop that’s been going strong for years now, with no cosmetic damage like scratches and dents, but is starting to perform worse than it used to, you might benefit from an upgrade instead of a replacement. There are various ways you can cheaply upgrade your PC to improve its functionality and ultimately extend its life. Learning how to increase speed, free up memory, replace damaged components and add extra ports can all help save you from having to buy a new computer. In this article, we will look at the easiest ways to upgrade your PC.

Extra ports

Sometimes people need to buy a new computer for the simple fact that their existing one lacks the kinds of ports or number of ports that they require. This is one problem that can easily be solved through a cheap upgrade. Because everything is trending towards wirelessness, ports are becoming less and less useful and manufacturers are excluding them from designs – but some of us still need ports to get things done.

The upgrade you would need in this instance is an extension hub, these can be attached to your computer and offer you additional USB ports, the ability to connect to Ethernet cables, insert a memory stick or attach a second monitor. This can give you all the connections you need without having to invest in a new device.

Add an internal hard drive

Upgrading your hard drive is a fantastic way to breathe new life into your old computer and save you the trouble of buying a new one. Installing a second hard drive does require some technical knowledge, but you can find some great tutorials online. Alternatively, you could simply take your device into a gadget shop and have them do it for you.

It is essential that you buy the right hard drive that is built for your model of computer, otherwise it won’t fit and you’ll have wasted your money.

Install more RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and can be considered your computer’s thinking space. RAM can get clogged up due to various causes, such as having too many browser tabs open, too many applications running or huge multimedia files like movies stored on your device. Installing additional RAM can significantly boost your laptop’s functionality.

Each computer varies in how much RAM it can hold, so researching this in relation to your own device is important. Desktops are better suited to this upgrade because their housings have much more physical space where you could install the extra RAM. Many laptops do allow you to add ram, however.
